local电话有两种付费方式：一种是Flat rate，一个月30多美元，可以随便打，适用于大家share；另一种是按次数记费，每个月基本费是10几美元，每拨通一次10美分（不论你打多久）。

long distance: 还是用学生会的电话卡吧！长话公司有很多，这里不一一介绍了。不过还是要提醒大家要对hidden charge提高警惕！

汽车

1. 如何考取驾驶执照？

考驾照需要三个步骤，分别在2，3，4中详细说明。

2. 步骤1：考learner permit：

靠lerner permit是笔试。可分为两个部分：
1. 考前准备: 到 DMV (Department of Motor Viecle) 领取报名表和学习手册。学习手册的内容（要能够回答每章后面的问题）。
2. 考试: 考试的地点在DMV. 出发之前带齐材料：SSN(社会保险号），护照，报名表，等等（一定要带足够的“点“!). 还要带上钱。考过了交钱，考不过不交。$50左右。可以用支票。还要测视力（只要眼睛没有严重的问题都可以通过）。通过了lermer permit的考试，你就会得到一张lerner permit卡（当时给你一张暂时的，正式的过后再寄给你）。

3. 步骤2：看录像和第二次笔试

第一次笔试后，你还会拿到一张纸，告诉你到什么地方去参加 “5 hour pre-licensing training"，也就是第二次笔试。一共有四个考点，其中“Bell atou driving shool”是最近的，在步行距离之内。记得带上Permit和cash（大约$35，去之前打电话问一下现在的数目）。考试很简单，不过一定要注意听讲，因为有许多答案讲员在解说的时候就公布了。

4. 步骤3：路试

通过第二次笔试后，就可以用发票上的红色数字约路考了，预约电话是：1-800-801-3614。路考地点是：

5. 如何搜集买车信息？

二手车（used car）广告信息有以下几个渠道：

• 学校内的布告栏（可以在union及各个building中找到）
• local的报纸和杂志（可以在price chopper里找到）

7. 汽车被拖走了怎么办？

如果汽车被拖走了，应打电话到TROY警察局（2704411）。因为拖车公司在拖车之前都必须向警察局登记，而TROY有好几家拖车公司。若是因为清扫街道被拖, 拨打TROY卫生局(2704579). 拨通以上号码后，向对方描述汽车的牌子和年份，以及停在何处被拖，对方就会告诉你你的车子被哪家公司拖走了，并给你电话号码。你可以立刻与拖车公司联系，然后直接去取车就行啦（记得带上钱！）。

从美国去加拿大需要办加拿大的签证，而从加拿大返美，则只需I-20，不需要再去加拿大的美国使馆签证。但是I-20必须在前往加拿大之前由ISSS签过字方可。办理加拿大签证有两个方法，一是亲自去面试，二是通过邮寄的方式。离我们这儿比较近的加拿大使馆有两个，一是在Buffalo，另一个是在New York City。申请之前要把材料准备齐全。申请方法，材料清单，邮寄地址均可在这两个使馆的网站上找到：

5. 如何购买飞机票（机票代理）？

1.美国医疗保险基本常识

在校学生一般都需要购买医疗保险，不同的险种对伤病有不同的理赔涵盖范围。ＲＰＩ的学生在本校购买的保险来自于 Administrative Concepts, INC. 它包括了以下几种伤病的理赔。

1. 处方药的减免
凭任何合法医生开出的合法处方均可持方在任何一家药店买药。届时出示医疗卡便自动得到应有的减免额。此额度可为90%或更低。详细解释请到 Administrative Concepts 网站查询。

2. 生病，伤害的理赔
由学校医务室诊断并介绍至外院的病人，账单一般被医务室直接寄到保险公司。比较麻烦一点的是急救医疗。由医务室诊断后再介绍至外院的急病通常也无须自己处理账单。运动创伤或事故受伤后直接赴外院治疗的，需要把所有的账单连同一份填好的Claim Form(可从医务室取得)寄至保险公司。然后静候佳音。 有一点需要注意，千万不要在可以去医务室的情况下擅自去外院的急救中心，否则你可能不得不自己支付几百或更高的急救医疗费。 任何有关这方面的申诉或疑问，可到医务室询问Bonica 或直接打电话给保险公司Customer Service，电话号码在医疗卡上。 当然找医务室会更贴心一点，毕竟自家人说自家话嘛。
3. 牙病保险
每年有$500的牙病保险。可以到医务室获取一份附近牙医的名单（在保险网络内）然后无须通过医务室就可以自己去看牙。每年有两次洗牙的机会，不要错过哦。 每次看牙的25 块挂号费要自己出。

1. 如何在学校的UNIX机器上读写中文？

学校的UNIX机器有3种：SGI(Silicon Graphics), IBM and Sun. 您按以下步骤操作就可以读写中文了：

1. 登陆进UNIX系统后，输入以下命令后回车（注意在 . 后面有一个空格）：
   . /dept/union/csa/chinese/CSAinit
2. 在Netscape中，按"View" ->"Character Set"->" Simplified Chinese (GB2312)"选择中文字体，即可阅读中文。
3. Internet Explorer自带中文：按"View"->"Encoding"->"Chinese Simplified (GB2312)”即可。
4. 写中文（仅限于SGI机器)：在输入了1中的命令之后，输入以下命令并回车：
   cxterm
   会产生一个新窗口（cxterm window)。在这个窗口中可以输入中文（按F6切换到中文全拼输入）。
5. 收发e-mail:您有多种选择：
   （1）用Webmail：在Netscape（windows下可用IE)中输入 webmail.rpi.edu,等连接上以后，输入您的RCS用户名和密码就可以收发邮件了。
   （2）用ZMail：在登陆进UNIX系统之后，您可以在菜单上找到ZMail。ZMail是一个图形界面的E-mail工具，直观易用。
   （3）用pine：输入以下命令并回车：
   /dept/acm/bin/pine
   就可以启动pine。（您可以在您home directory下的.bash_profile中加上下面的一行：
   PATH=$PATH:/dept/acm/bin/ ， 以后再登陆之后直接输入"pine"就可以了。）
   如果您不熟悉pine的用法，请参考这里。
   
6. 用中文收发email:
   (1)打开一个cxterm window（见4），在cxterm window中打开pine（见5-（3））,您就可以读写中文e-mail啦！
   (2)如果您用Webmail写中文e-mail，那就只能在cxterm中写好中文再粘贴过去了。
   (3)Zmail不支持中文。

身为RPI的毕业生，工作是不愁找不到的。只是年薪，地点和个人喜好是否全部满足的问题。这里向大家介绍一下如何开始准备，至于细节，要靠各位八仙过海，各显其能了。

首先你要准备RESUME，COVER LETTER，服装, 买书。

RESUME：
简洁，MISTAKE FREE，格式要符合规范。这个在网上到处有贴，你可以去一些个人网站上看其他的简历，去粗取精，他为我用。。。尤其找和自己专业相近的人士，可以了解一些学兄，学姐是如何炮制他们的成功典范的。写好后，可以去学校的WRITING CENTER，(SAGE BUILDING 4 楼)让专业人士帮忙找错。

另外，MONSTER网站上有RESUME的写作器，那个格式还不错，可以借鉴。

另外根据所选择公司的方向，适当添减工作经验。要知道老美重视专业对口，如果你申请一份工作，最好有相关工作的经验作BACK UP。1~2 年为佳。CO-OP也是不错的经验点，别忘了这个是在美工作经验，有案可察，较国内的工作经历而言，更能有吹嘘的余地。

COVER LETTER：

标准的格式可在各种书中察到。RPI的CDC的网上也有，加上个人发挥一点就好了。

服装：

这个男孩子是西服革履，DARK BLUE OR BLACK，女孩子是西服套装DARK BLUE 或BLACK。

书：

去www.ecampus.com, search 'interview questions', 你可以发现很多关于面试问题的书，还有如何写个人简历或COVER LETTER的书。书基本上只有十几美刀， 有的还不到10$，可是其中介绍之经验技巧足以使你应付INTERVIEW中的刁钻问题，可谓物有所值。

有一本BEST ANSWERS FOR 201 INTERVIEW QUESTIONS， 相当不错。

然后去RPI的CDC 的注册。手续费是5$，你就会被要求参加一个学习班，就是听个SEMINA，CDC的工作人员会给你介绍如何递简历，在网上登记注册并把简历上载。CDC在CII的二楼。工作人员会给你详细介绍具体事宜。CDC有专门人士帮你CHECK RESUME呢！不要忘记帮忙RPI学生是他们的职责，要利用CDC的资源欧！

Tough Questions

Q1: Tell me about your self.

Q7: Describe a situation where you failed to reach a goal.

A1:Tell me about your self.
To know how to respond is important and to do so in two minutes or less is essential. Whether you put interviewers to sleep or not is not as important as being able to retain their attention. More than two minutes increases the possibility of either boring interviewers or losing their attention. In case this doesn't bother you, consider what you might have to do awaken an interviewer who is fast asleep.
Take the time before the meeting to plan a script that you prepare precisely for such occasions. You can follow this starting with school, and progressing through the jobs that you have held, about what you have been doing. Include any accomplishments, and bring up to the present.


A2: What do you look for in a job?
Briefly put, describe a situation that show you and the organization as linked. For example, I am looking for a position where I can make a meaningful contribution continuously and grow professionally. You may also consider the best job you ever had to confirm your thoughts on this question before the meeting. Of course, having a positive correlation between this response and job that the organization has open is an advantage.


A3: What are your strong points? What are your weak points?
Take this opportunity to share with the interviewer your strong points, including qualities that are relevant for the position at hand and also important to you. Loyalty, a strong work ethic, good interpersonal and communications skills, a project and results orientation are all personal characteristics that interviewers love to hear. Be prepared to give situations that exemplify one or more of your personal characteristics.
These questions often travel on the heels of each other. Do not be as open with your weaknesses as with your strong points. Try to identify qualities(or their lack) that are not so relevant to the position being discussed.
I must admit I am a workaholic.
I am impatient with others who display no sense of urgency.
Or damn yourself with faint praise:
I always try to come in ahead of deadlines.


A4: Why did you attend that particular school?
Do not be frivolous or cute, regardless of the degree of temptation. Interviewers possibly have positive or negative feelings about the school and may even have gone there themselves-or a close family member might have. Practice your answer before the meeting. It is not necessary to give the real answer. Remember that you are in control of what you wish to disclose and that your reason for the meeting is to continue the interview process and other selection steps so that a job offer will be given to you.
For now give the reason that makes the most sense to you and that makes you appear a promising candidate in the interviewers eyes.

A5: how do/did you get along with your current/last work group?
Avoid negatives. If you have anything negative to say, it can only be done in the context of , I was much more interested in getting the job done than they were. Otherwise, you were very effective in your dealings with them, and in fact there was real cohesion in the group. (Provide one or two examples of how the group clung together in a crisis situation.)


A6: Tell me about a difficult situation when you pulled the team together.
Identify a situation that leads to appositive outcome and be careful during the answering of the question to mix your we and I pronouns to demonstrate that you were an active participant of the group.


A7: Describe a situation where you failed to reach a goal.
Interviewers try to determine how you deal with adversity and see if you have a need to win every time. Identify a situation where you had to adjust your sights and, if possible, go back to succeed at a later date. Succeeding, however, is not as important as your demonstration of an ability to deal with tough times as well as good.

This is the Career Development Center of RPI. You should definitely register on that website. It can provide help to both co-op and full-time job-seeking students. The most useful links of it is InterviewTRAK and Job&Internship list. You can register on-campus interview on InterviewTRAK. Just submit your resume to the company listed on InterviewTRAK and check if you are pre-selected. It will list most companies that come to RPI campus and the date of resume submitting and interview. The requirements of the position are also given. The system will automatically check if you are qualified for those positions. Job&Internship list has lots of positions open. You don抰 need qualify any requirement. Just submit you resume to companies you are interested in.Sometimes companies will make a presentation without notifying CDC. So pay attention to ADs on walls and visit CDC frequently.

The job section of MIT BBS has lots of information about how to find a job in US. You can also ask your own questions, there are always somebody else has the answer.
